Today, I would like to talk about the effect of silicon powder on coatings.

In powder coatings, titanium dioxide is the main white filler, but its preparation process is complex, which pollutes the environment and is expensive. Silicon powder and titanium dioxide have similar structure, so we try to use silicon powder instead of titanium dioxide.

The hardness of coatings is related to the main film-forming materials, pigments and fillers. When the main film-forming materials are fixed, fillers play a leading role in the hardness of coatings. It can be seen from table 2 that with the increase of silicon powder content, the hardness of the film increases, which can greatly improve the wear resistance of the film.

The results show that the surface activity of silicon powder is higher than that of van der Waals force, which is beneficial to the stress transfer between silicon powder and epoxy resin and improves the ability to bear load. This is the reason why the impact resistance of the coating increases with the increase of silicon powder. When the content of silicon powder is more than 50%, the strength of the composite decreases and the impact resistance decreases. Therefore, silicon powder can not completely replace titanium dioxide, but can cooperate to improve the impact resistance in a certain range.

Unsaturated polyester insulating paint is made of diol, saturated dicarboxylic acid and unsaturated dicarboxylic acid firstly polymerized, then diluted with styrene, diallyl phthalate or acrylate. It is suitable for impregnation treatment of all kinds of motors and transformers, and can improve the insulation performance, mechanical performance and thermal conductivity of electrical appliances.

However, the addition of silicon powder will lead to the decline of gloss and whiteness of the film. If the requirements for gloss and whiteness are not high, silicon powder is a good substitute for titanium dioxide.
